Signs you need this service

  • The window handle is stiff, gritty or will not turn fully
  • A handle has snapped clean off
  • The window will not stay open in the wind, the friction stay has gone
  • A door hinge is squeaking, loose or has visible play
  • The lock turns but no longer throws the bolts
  • A key has snapped in the cylinder

The mechanism inside a uPVC window or door does the actual locking work. The handle on the outside just turns a spindle. When the gearing wears out, the lock will not engage, or the handle has gone stiff and gritty, it is the inner mechanism that needs swapping, not the whole window.

We carry the common espagnolette and shootbolt gearing, friction stays, hinges, handles and cylinders on the van. If we have the part in stock, the job is done that visit. If it is an older or unusual mechanism we will identify the make, order it in, and come back.

Signs the mechanism is going

Hard to turn the handle. Window will not stay open in the wind. Door drops and catches the frame. Hinges are loose, squeaky or have play in them. Lock barrel turns but does not throw. Friction stay snapped, so the window swings about. Any of these means a repair, not a replacement.

What it costs

Lock and handle repairs are usually the cheapest job we do. A typical handle or cylinder swap is under an hour. Mechanism swaps take a bit longer because we strip the window or door down to get at it. We quote on arrival once we have seen what the issue actually is.

Areas we cover

Bristol, Bath, Weston, Cardiff, Newport and everything in between. Six days a week.

Common questions about this service

Can you fix it on the first visit?

Most of the time, yes. We carry the common parts in stock. If yours is older or unusual we will measure, photograph, order it in, and book a return visit.

My key turns but the door will not lock, what is wrong?

The mechanism inside the door has worn out. The key still turns the cylinder, but the cylinder is not throwing the gearing any more. New mechanism needed.

How much is a typical lock repair?

It varies with the part. Handle and cylinder swaps are the cheap end. Full multipoint mechanisms cost more because of the part and the strip-down time. We quote when we see it.

Common Questions

About working with Mr Window Repairs

Do you offer free quotes?

Yes, all our quotes are free with no obligation. We come to your property, look at the job properly, and give you a written quote you can take away and think about. We do not do high-pressure sales calls afterwards.

What areas do you cover?

We cover Bristol and the whole BS postcode area, out into Somerset, Gloucestershire, Bath, Weston-super-Mare, and across the Severn Bridge into Newport, Cardiff, Swansea and the South Wales valleys. For larger jobs we will travel further. If you are not sure, ring and ask.

How quickly can you come out?

For emergencies such as broken windows that have left a house insecure, we aim for the same day wherever we can fit it in. For standard repairs, normally within the same week. We will tell you a real time when you ring, not a guess.

Do you guarantee your work?

Yes. All our workmanship comes with a twelve month guarantee. Sealed units have a manufacturer warranty on top of that, normally five or ten years depending on the unit. We are not a fly-by-night outfit, we live and work here.

Are you VAT registered and insured?

Yes to both. Full public liability insurance and VAT registered. Happy to provide certificates on request, particularly for commercial and landlord jobs.

What hours do you work?

Monday to Saturday, 6am to 10pm. We work some Sundays for commercial premises that trade Monday to Saturday. Ring us, tell us what time suits you, and we will fit around it where we can.
